Graphic design and user experience design
Graphic design, UX, and UI – what does that actually mean? What makes a design a thoroughly well-thought-out entity?
The two terms User Experience Design (UX) and User Interface (UI) Design are still very new, but both have existed for a long time. Fundamentally, both UX and UI design are about ensuring that objects are easy and pleasant to use. In relation to web design, this means, for example, that a website should be clear and intuitive to use, with a well-structured content that leaves visitors with no questions (UX). And it should do all this in an aesthetically pleasing and pleasant way (UI).
UX and UI have always been applied in physical space, whether in the structure of a book or brochure, or in the design of a stereo system or a kitchen appliance.
Brochures have always been designed to be easy to understand, aesthetically pleasing, and clearly laid out. It was important that readers navigate directly to the article they wanted to read. Much like a modern website — only with more pages to flip through.
The same applies to the design of a technical device. Ideally, it should not only blend harmoniously into any conceivable home decor, but it should also be as simple to use as possible, ideally intuitive. Users shouldn’t have to search for the manual to access a specific function. This is also very similar for a modern website.
Graphic design, like UX and UI, is about usability—and a pleasant experience. It’s about the interaction between people and technical components—whether it’s a microwave or a website.
Graphic Design & Emotions
Every design process is about its impact on people. About emotions. Every graphic designer uses the possibilities of their craft to influence the viewer’s emotions. The more emotions a design triggers, the more distinctive and recognizable it becomes. Caution is advised here: after all, a design can be memorable even with very negative associations. Playing on emotions at all costs can backfire!
Some important rules that designers should keep in mind regarding emotions are:
- Address the subconscious, not the intellect.
- Create a positive emotional connection between your brand and users.
- Use familiar conventions.
- Be artistic and playful.
- Don’t try to be perfect – consciously incorporate small errors and flaws.
- Mirror human emotions and instincts.
