In 2012, the Pergamon Museum in Berlin presented the archaeological heritage of Saudi Arabia with the exhibition “Roads of Arabia.” Following stops in Paris, Barcelona, and St. Petersburg, the exhibition was on view in Berlin from January 26 to April 9, 2012. The exhibition was held under the patronage of the Federal President of Germany and the King of Saudi Arabia, Abdullah ibn Abd al-Aziz. Sebastian Klammer Grafikdesign Berlin was commissioned to design the exhibition website, which aimed not only to provide in-depth details on the exhibits and offer background information but also to draw attention to special events and dates surrounding the exhibition. The result was a highly distinctive web design from Berlin that successfully combined the aesthetic allure of the ancient artifacts with a modern, user-friendly, and intuitive navigation system. Designed to be fully responsive, the website aimed to provide an optimal user experience across a wide range of devices; furthermore, through the background information it contained, it served as a digital extension of the physical exhibition at the Pergamon Museum.

The exhibition was organized by the Saudi Commission for Tourism and Antiquities in collaboration with the Museum of Islamic Art (part of the National Museums in Berlin). German research projects—conducted in Saudi Arabia by the Orient Department of the German Archaeological Institute, the Centre for Modern Oriental Studies (ZMO), and the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities—were showcased in a dedicated gallery as an example of international scientific cooperation among Berlin-based institutions. Supported by an extensive accompanying program focused on cultural heritage, the exhibition served to bolster the still relatively nascent efforts to research and preserve Saudi Arabia’s Islamic and pre-Islamic cultural heritage.
